CHICAGO — A published report says overtime costs at the Chicago Transit Authority have jumped, even as officials admit that’s partly why the agency is deep in the red.
The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/xh9Pia) widespread issues with overtime at CTA, including a discrepancy in how CTA calculates overtime and employees who actively sought overtime to boost salaries.
The newspaper — which analyzed 2010 payroll records — says CTA is the only public agency in Illinois that takes overtime into account when calculating pensions. CTA reported a $1 million increase in overtime costs in 2011.
A CTA spokeswoman says overtime is budgeted for.
The Tribune says bus drivers received the biggest portion of overtime — about 95 percent of the approximately 4,600 drivers. One driver more than doubled his pay of $59,580.
