ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is criticizing a proposal to build a smaller St. Croix River bridge.

The Sensible Stillwater Bridge Partnership drafted the plan to counter a drive for a $690 million four-lane bridge at Oak Park Heights. The alternate plan envisions a three-lane bridge built diagonally to connect with the Wisconsin end of the Stillwater Lift Bridge. Proponents have said such a bridge would save millions of dollars for Minnesota taxpayers while addressing transportation needs for western Wisconsin.
