GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Construction of sections of urban loops and interstates in six North Carolina cities are speeding up because the state will issue debt repaid with expected federal transportation revenue.

Gov. Beverly Perdue announced Wednesday that large projects in Asheville, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Greenville, Wilmington and Winston-Salem are being accelerated. Several of them weren’t currently funded or were at least five years away from getting started.

Perdue said the projects will be paid for using GARVEE bonds, which North Carolina has been using for only a few years. The governor said accelerating infrastructure will help create jobs and attract companies to the state.

The projects include Interstate 26 in Asheville, Fayetteville’s Outer Loop, the Wilmington Bypass and future Interstate 74 in Winston-Salem.

The governor announced the changes at a transportation summit in Greensboro.
