Unfortunately, some potential areas of discussion are missing from these articles. Keeping Right Except to Pass is an important part in maintaining smooth traffic flow on any roadway – not just highways, which reduces congestion and conflicts. Pedestrian accidents where the pedestrian was jaywalking is another typical area where people die, but goes highly unreported. (We only hear that a ped was killed…but never get the info if it was the ped’s fault or the driver’s fault)

It would be nice to know how these deadly accidents occur. Unlike what many people think, highway driving in 55 65 mph zones accounts for a minority of deadly accidents, and speeding accounts for only about 25% of all deadly accidents – and that includes both 65 mph highway zones and 35 mph local roadways. Even cell phones tend to get a lot of blame for accidents, but no one ever reports on exactly how common (or not common) they are when it comes to fatalities.

Unfortunately, it seems that many accidents, once they are originally reported, are never followed up to tell us what truly happened. It allows the public to believe one thing when another reason is really the cause of the accident.

So, drive safely out there. But maybe next year, there can be a better report on why people are dying on our roadways. It’s easy to say “Drive Safely”….it’s even better to say “Watch out for these particular crash types, because that’s how people are dying!”
