NEWARK — NJ Transit received two federal grants totaling $13 million Monday.

A $4.6 million grant will be used to to improve ground transportation facilities at the Frank R. Lautenberg Secaucus Transfer Station.

That funding will improve bus circulation around the station, said Penny Bassett-Hackett, NJ Transit spokeswoman.

Bus service was an “add-on,” which was originally built as a transfer point between various NJ Transit rail lines.

The second grant of $8.57 million will finance a retrofitting of older buses in the fleet with better radios and onboard “smart bus” technology, Bassett-Hackett said.

New buses currently being delivers already have that technology.

The grants were part of a total of $928.5 million in federal funds awarded to more than 300 mass transit projects across the country announced by U.S. Transportation secretary Ray LaHood. The USDOT received applications for 839 project which would total $4.9 billion, if they were all funded.
