SANTA FE, N.M. — Gov. Susana Martinez’s administration says it has spent $177,000 on the program to review foreign nationals’ driver’s licenses before a judge halted it last month.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/ntAwme) that the New Mexico governor is continuing to sift through returned letters that had been sent to license-holders, looking for evidence of fraud.

The department’s Motor Vehicle Division in July sent out letters to 10,000 randomly selected foreign nationals — including illegal immigrants — with New Mexico driver’s licenses, ordering them to make appointments and show up with documents proving their residency or face license cancellation.

The residency certification program has been frozen while a court challenge to the program is pending.

Martinez wants the state lawmakers to repeal the 2003 law allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.
